With less than a year to go until the world-famous Tall Ships’ Race returns to Hartlepool in July 2023, we’re delighted to see ships starting to sign up for this iconic event. These are the ships signed up so far – more coming soon!
ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT II

Germany
Built: 2011
Length: 57m
‘Alex-2’ has been sailing the high seas since 2011. Like its predecessor, Alexander Von Humboldt, Alex-2 is a civilian square-rigger offering tall ship voyages for everyone, regardless of previous experience. All you need is an open mind and a spirit of adventure!
DAR MLODZIEZY

Length: 94.82m
Dar Mlodziezy has been owned by the Gdynia Maritime Academy since she was built in 1982. Her name means “the gift of youth” and she replaced the beautiful frigate Dar Pormoza which had trained future officers of merchant and fishing fleets for over fifty years.

A three-masted steel barque used as a stationary school ship in Germany for most of the First World War, later becoming a trophy of war at the end of hostilities. Since 1923 the Norwegian Shipowners Association has operated her for sail training adventures.

Sailing ship Eendracht is owned and operated by the Dutch Foundation Stichting Zeilschip EEndracht, which offers active sailing experiences to young people and adults whilst promoting the maritime traditions of the Netherlands as a seagoing nation.
FREDERYK CHOPIN

Length: 44.35m
Named after the polish nineteenth century musical composer, “Fryderyk Chopin” has a long bowsprit which means she can set five headsails and take advantage of light winds. There are as many as 6 yards on every mast, which is extremely rare.
ROALD AMUNDSEN

Length: 40.80m
Originally a GDR’s National People’s Army tank logger, in 1992 the society `Learn to Live on Sailing Ships` turned her into a brig. Her first subsequent voyage was captained by Immo von Schnurbein, a former captain of the German Navy sailing ship, Gorch Fock.

LOA was built as a three-masted schooner in Svendborg, Denmark in 1922 and restored as a barquentine in Aalborg, Denmark 2004-09. LOA is Denmark’s third Class A ship, the two others being the full-rigged ships DANMARK and GEORG STAGE.
TS ROYALIST

The Sea Cadets flagship, she is a training brig that takes twenty-four cadets to sea for six day voyages. The vessel was built during 2014 / 2015 in Spain. The Princess Royal officially named the Marine Society and Sea Cadets’ flagship, TS Royalist.
WYLDE SWAN

The Dutch sailing vessel Wylde Swan is a ship built for speed. She started life as a motor vessel in the 1920’s and brought fresh herring from the fishing grounds to markets ashore. Her slender hull is reminiscent of the large schooner yachts of the 1900 era.

Morgenster was launched in 1919 as a herring lugger ‘Vrouw Maria’ SCH 324 for the fishing company den Dulk. She was built at the shipyeard Boot in Alphen.
GULDEN LEEUW

The ‘Gulden Leeuw’ is a big, sturdy sailing ship reminiscent of the 30’s and with the deck layout of a classic yacht. The ship was built in 1937 on behalf of the Danish Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.
BIMA SUCI

Built: 2017
Length: 93.24m
Launched in 2017 Bima Suci is the Indonesian Navy’s newest, and largest sail training ship. The vessel is named after Javanese hero that was a symbol of force, bravery and righteousness. This spectacular vessel is one of the largest Tall Ships in the world and has 36,200 sq. ft. of sails, and a capacity for a crew of 200.

Length: 54m
Capitan Miranda was launched in Spain in 1930 and began her career as a cargo vessel. She is named after the Uruguayan hydrographer Captain Francisco Miranda (1868 -1925) who served Uruguay as a cabinet officer, war secretary and later professor of marine geography at the Naval Academy of Uruguay.
BETTY
She was built as a replica of the crab cutters traditional in Southern England. Her hull is based on the original design of the boats fishing the English Channel and the Atlantic.

RUPEL
Rupel was built on the banks of the river Rupel by unemployed youngsters and launched in 1996. This beautiful sailing ship is a regular in the Tall Ships’ Races.

SWAN
Built as a Fife herring drifter in Lerwick, Shetland in 1900, the Swan was one of the vast fleet of wooden vessels fishing for herring in the early 20th century.

JOLIE BRISE
Jolie Brise is the truly world famous, 24 metre, Gaff Rigged Pilot Cutter. Built in 1913, one of many claims to fame includes being the last sailing vessel to carry the Royal Mail under sail.

Excelsior is a Lowerstoft Smack which was built in 1921 to fish in the North Sea in all weathers as one of a fleet of 300 similar vessels.

Belle Poule and Etoile, these two schooners, were constructed in 1932 by the Chantier Noval de Normandie, in Fecamp, for the French naval academy.

Aglaia was built by the Colin Archer Club in Stockholm, a club that was founded in 1975 to rebuild hulls based on the famous Norwegian rescue vessels of the last century.

Built by hand in Spain between 1980 and 1984, ATYLA is one of the very few handmade wooden hulled Tall Ships in the world that is still in operation.

Just under 13 metres long, and over 13 metres high, this Polish Class C has classic lines and is a regular to Tall Ships Races. She takes 7 trainees.
