Ships signing up to visit Tall Ships Hartlepool 2023!

With less than a year to go until the world-famous Tall Ships’ Race returns to Hartlepool in July 2023, we’re delighted to see ships starting to sign up for this iconic event. These are the ships signed up so far – more coming soon!

ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT II

Class A

Germany

Built: 2011

Length: 57m

‘Alex-2’ has been sailing the high seas since 2011. Like its predecessor, Alexander Von Humboldt,  Alex-2 is a civilian square-rigger offering tall ship voyages for everyone, regardless of previous experience. All you need is an open mind and a spirit of adventure! 

DAR MLODZIEZY

Built: 1982

Length: 94.82m

Dar Mlodziezy has been owned by the Gdynia Maritime Academy since she was built in 1982. Her name means “the gift of youth” and she replaced the beautiful frigate Dar Pormoza which had trained future officers of merchant and fishing fleets for over fifty years.

Built: 1914

Length: 84.60m

A three-masted steel barque used as a stationary school ship in Germany for most of the First World War, later becoming a trophy of war at the end of hostilities. Since 1923 the Norwegian Shipowners Association has operated her for sail training adventures.

EENDRACHT

Built: 1989

Length: 55.30m

Sailing ship Eendracht is owned and operated by the Dutch Foundation Stichting Zeilschip EEndracht, which offers active sailing experiences to young people and adults whilst promoting the maritime traditions of the Netherlands as a seagoing nation.

FREDRYK CHOPIN

Built: 1992

Length: 44.35m

Named after the polish nineteenth century musical composer, “Fryderyk Chopin” has a long bowsprit which means she can set five headsails and take advantage of light winds. There are as many as 6 yards on every mast, which is extremely rare. 

ROALD AMUNDSEN

Tall Ship Roald Amundsen

Built: 1952

Length: 40.80m

Originally a GDR’s National People’s Army tank logger, in 1992 the society `Learn to Live on Sailing Ships` turned her into a brig. Her first subsequent voyage was captained by Immo von Schnurbein, a former captain of the German Navy sailing ship, Gorch Fock.

Built: 1922

Length: 30.51m

LOA was built as a three-masted schooner in Svendborg, Denmark in 1922 and restored as a barquentine in Aalborg, Denmark 2004-09.  LOA is Denmark’s third Class A ship, the two others being the full-rigged ships DANMARK and GEORG STAGE.

ROYALIST

Length: 27.00m

The Sea Cadets flagship, she is a training brig that takes twenty-four cadets to sea for six day voyages. The vessel was built during 2014 / 2015 in Spain. The Princess Royal officially named the Marine Society and Sea Cadets’ flagship, TS Royalist.

BETTY

She was built as a replica of the crab cutters traditional in Southern England. Her hull is based on the original design of the boats fishing the English Channel and the Atlantic.

RUPEL

Rupel was built on the banks of the river Rupel by unemployed youngsters and launched in 1996. This beautiful sailing ship is a regular in the Tall Ships’ Races.

Length: 17.55m

SWAN

Built as a Fife herring drifter in Lerwick, Shetland in 1900, the Swan was one of the vast fleet of wooden vessels fishing for herring in the early 20th century.

BELFER

Just under 13 metres long, and over 13 metres high, this Polish Class C has classic lines and is a regular to Tall Ships Races. She takes 7 trainees.

ESPRIT

Esprit is a cold-moulded wooden boat with a modern schooner rig, gaff fore and Bermuda main. She is a fast two-master with a fine heritage.

FARAMIR

Previously ‘Hartlepool Renaissance’, this impressive  ketch rig is owned by the Cirdan Sailing trust. Faramir is built for sail training.

Saeftinghe, designed and built in the Netherlands is a wonderful example of a great all-round and comfortable classic yacht, made for long journeys.

Designed and built as a single-handed racer, Spaniel is a fast ship with a crew dedicated to competition, fun, and racing to the finish line!

WIELKOPOLSKA

Lovingly restored after years of disrepair, Wielkopolska which means ‘Greater Poland’ is a Baltic Sea classic, much loved by her sailors.

This fine Bermuda Ketch is owned and operated by the Belgian Navy and carries 10 lucky trainees. She is a handsome sight under full sail.

The local favourite! Sailing North East sails Black Diamond out of Hartlepool: surely a favourite to compete in the legs in and out of the her home port.

The impressive and very fast Patricia is a racer through and through. Modern in design inside and out she is a head-turner and always one to watch.
